GSA Spotlight: Mills High School

On January 17, the GSA at Mills hosted a training for teachers and staff on LGBT issues and how to make the school safer for LGBT youth. Facilitated by Ellen Press, GSA Advisor, the training included a video made by the GSA, personal testimonies by students, information about AB 537 from GSA Network, and a number of other activities. As a follow-up to the training, students presented GSA Network's Liberation Ink posters at a faculty meeting a few weeks later. "It was great. All of the posters were taken, and are now displayed proudly all over school," said John Thompson, a senior at Mills and a GSA Network board member.  The Mills GSA is planning to do peer education workshops next.

17. NEWS: Gay Club Gets Go Ahead At Klein High (Huston, TX)

Click2Houston, March 5, 2003
http://www.click2houston.com/hou/education/stories/education-headlines-202065020030305-100330.html

HOUSTON -- Klein High School officials announced Wednesday that a settlement has been reached in a federal lawsuit filed on behalf of a lesbian student over the right to create a gay club on campus.

Marla Dukler, 17, a junior at the school, told News2Houston that she was very happy by the decision to allow the formation of the Gay-Straight Alliance support group.

"I definitely think that the effort was worth it. I had to give up a little bit of time, but now my school is going to be a whole lot safer because of it," Marla said. "We're going to be able to meet. We're going to be able to work towards spreading tolerance around the school."

Dukler said that she was met with resistance at the school when she tried to form the support group in October.

The Klein Independent School District did not respond to a request from Marla and other members of her group to form the club last year, forcing the ACLU to take up the group's cause and file a lawsuit against the district.

"What we do know is that a lot of students want to form bible clubs and they have that right. They want to form Gay-Straight Alliances and they have that right," said David George, president of the Houston chapter of the ACLU.

District officials said that they would have fought the lawsuit if they thought they could have won the case.

They said that the basic decision to allow the group to meet at school was beyond their control, because it is governed by the federal Equal Access Act.

"The issue is that regardless of my personal feelings, the principal's personal feelings or the community's opinion it is a matter of law," Superintendent Jim Surratt said.

School officials said that students will be required to have permission slips from parents and meet other requirements, which will also affect other clubs.

Marla said that the club will promote tolerance and a safe place for homosexuals to go and is expected to have its first meeting sometime after the spring break.

On Feb. 13, school board members went into a closed-door meeting to discuss the suit, but because of the pending litigation they made no decision on whether to allow the formation of the gay club.

Parents and community leaders protested school board meeting last month and asked the district to fight the lawsuit.

"We oppose the idea that all students be brought in to learn the gay and lesbian lifestyle," resident Jim Cabines said.

Lawsuits have been filed in other states to allow gay alliance groups on school campuses, and each case the clubs have prevailed.

18. NEWS: Student Pleased with Response to Coming Out (Casper, WY)

Casper Star-Tribune, March 6, 2003
http://www.casperstartribune.net/articles/2003/03/06/news/casper/c2485e3fa8f9776a03e5be64c2658d9c.txt
by Holly Strother

A Natrona County High School student said Wednesday his fellow classmates and faculty were very supportive of him for making his claims of harassment known in a story in the Star-Tribune.

"I've been approached by a lot of faculty and students that have shown their support," said Patrick Davenport. The 17-year-old wrote a letter published in the Star-Tribune on Feb. 27 about sexual harassment at the school.

"They're offering that their doors always are open if I need to talk and that people do have my back on this issue," he said at the school Wednesday afternoon.

Davenport's letter alerted school officials to incidents of alleged sexual harassment and threats to openly gay students.

Other students told Davenport on Wednesday that some teachers had copied an article from that morning's Star-Tribune and had classroom discussions on the issue.

"I think it is good that they can discuss something like this is class even though it's so controversial, especially within the schools," said Davenport. He said he hopes this will heighten awareness and staff will begin to crack down on even random comments.

Davenport said he witnesses well over 100 derogatory remarks a day at the school.

NCHS journalism instructor Rod Mahaffey said when he hears such remarks, he acknowledges them and responds.

"My guess is things probably look a little different from his perspective than they do from mine," said Mahaffey.

"The expression, 'That's so gay,' for example, is part of the vocabulary. I certainly am cognizant of those kinds of remarks and don't let them slide by," Mahaffey said. "I would be surprised if other faculty in this building did, either, and that would be true of any other crimes of sexual harassment."

Assistant NCHS Principal Chris Bolender said she did not see a difference Wednesday from any other day at the school but hopes that the Challenger Program -- a program that forces participants to evaluate their own and others' behavior -- will benefit all the students.

"It's my hope that the numbers of kids who are harassing him will diminish," said Bolender.

"We're going to try our hardest to make it work because I think it has the potential to change our school -- to change the way that kids look at each other and treat each other."

GSA Network Launches New Gender Identity Campaign

Thanks to grants from the Queer Youth Fund and the Kicking Assets Fund, both of the Tides Foundation, GSA Network is launching a new Gender Identity Campaign that will help implement  the state's gender identity non-discrimination policy in California schools.

We are looking for GSAs that are interested in working on campaigns that address gender identity issues at their schools. For example, a GSA could work on making a single stall bathroom available for transgender students or organize presentations about gender identity to educate students and teachers.

GSAs that participate in our Gender Identity Campaign will receive resources and campaign support from GSA Network.  We can also provide referrals to lawyers if legal help is necessary as part of the campaign.  These GSAs will also have the opportunity to contribute to a Gender Identity Campaign manual to be distributed to GSAs and student activists throughout the country.

If your GSA is interested in getting involved, visit http://www.gsanetwork.org/gender to fill out the Gender Identity Campaign Questionnaire.

1. Major Project on Queer Youth and Families Seeks Participants

Be part of a groundbreaking study to help families and communities provide support for queer youth. Help us learn about strength and resiliency among queer youth, not just risk behavior like in most studies. Help us understand how to strengthen families and increase support in ethnic communities when youth come out as lesbian, gay or bisexual.

BACKGROUND ON THE FAMILY ACCEPTANCE PROJECT
GSA Network has partnered with Caitlin Ryan and Rafael Diaz at San Francisco State University to conduct the first study of queer youth and families and the first comprehensive study of sexual orientation and ethnic families. The Family Acceptance Project uses a participatory research model to study the impact of family acceptance and rejection on the health and well-being of lesbian, gay, bisexual and queer youth.

We will use the information we find to enhance community programs, to develop training resources for health, mental health and school-based providers, and to help strengthen families in supporting non-heterosexual youth.  We need to reach out to a diverse group of adolescents with different kinds of family experiences. This information is essential to help us understand why some youth thrive while others struggle and to learn how best to provide support for them in families, schools and communities.

WHO SHOULD GET INVOLVED
We are currently looking for White and Latino youth, ages 13-18 to participate. We are looking for youth who have two adult family members who know about their sexual identity. We want to interview these youth and two adult family members about their experiences. All information is confidential and we will pay youth and family members a $25 stipend each, as compensation for their time.

We started the project by studying the experiences of White and Latino LGB youth and their families, and hope to expand it to include other ethnic groups with a much larger grant. We are reaching out to individuals and community-based groups that serve LGBT youth, Latino youth and youth, in general, as well as schools, clinics, recreational programs and other community agencies to identify youth to participate in the study.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED
If you are interested in helping or are a youth who would like to participate, please contact Teresa Betancourt at mailto:teresab@sfsu.edu, 415-522-8537 or Caitlin Ryan, mailto:caitlin@sfsu.edu, 415-522-5558 or call toll-free at 1-888-354-4222.  We are very grateful for your support and look forward to talking with you about the project in more detail.

19. SCHOLARSHIP: Target Stores and the Tiger Woods Foundation

Target Stores and the Tiger Woods Foundation Restructure Start Something Scholarship Program for Young People

Target Stores http://www.target.com/ and the Tiger Woods Foundation
http://www.twfound.org/ have restructured Start Something, a program that
helps young people pursue their dreams and goals and encourages youth
leadership and community stewardship.

The program is designed to help students identify their goals and choose and
prepare for an Action Project based on one of those goals. Students then
evaluate their efforts and prepare and give a presentation about their
project to family and friends. The program is set up as a series of ten
two-hour sessions designed to be completed over ten weeks, but it can also
be done in a few weeks or several months.

Young people between the ages of 8 and 17 can participate in the program in
two ways: as part of a group of students under the guidance of a teacher or
group leader, or on their own through the program's Web site.

Participating youth who complete the program can apply for a Start Something
scholarship ranging from $100 to $5,000 that can be used to help winners
continue to pursue their goals. Examples include music lessons, sports
camps, special educational programs, travel, and the purchase of equipment.
The scholarship program is available to young people in the United States
(not including territories and affiliated jurisdictions).

Scholarships are awarded three times a year, with applications due May 1,
September 1, and January 1. Over the course of the year, the program will
award scholarships totaling $300,000.

12. 1st Ever San Diego LGBT Youth Pride

Saturday, May 3, 2003, Noon-6pm

SAN DIEGO - The Youth Pride Committee, organizers of San Diego's first-ever LGBT Youth Pride, have chosen the theme "Shake, Rattle, and Revolution" as the
representation of the inaugural 2003 event. The theme will be mirrored by a quote by Emma Goldman stating, "If I can't dance to it, it's not my revolution."

Youth Pride 2003 welcomes all GLBTQQ young people and their allies from San Diego County and beyond, will meet at the Hillcrest Youth Center at noon that day, and march East on University Boulevard to their destination point in The Center's, 3909 Centre Street, parking lot. The event will continue with a youth-exclusive Festival within the lot's confines that will include an entertainment stage, information tables, BBQ and other refreshments, an awards ceremony, as well as a Drag/Youth pageant. The event will be restricted to youth ages 14-24.

Interested organizations may display information about their group and its workings via the supplied tables. Due to limited spacing, a small allotment of tables will be designated by topic and target group, as decided by the YPC. Various donor levels will be available for those wishing to exhibit their information with donations ranging from $25-$150. San Diego LGBTQQ Youth Pride is a project of San Diego LGBT Pride. The event is a youth-organized youth-run event catering to San Diego County's LGBT youth population. The purpose of the event is to provide young people with a safe place in the community to express who they are in the absence of fear and shame. All youth are welcome to attend despite their sexual identity.

For more information about Youth Pride 2003, event planning meetings, and to become and event exhibitor send an email to Youth Pride Executive Director, Ren Petty, at mailto:WatrBaby21@aol.com.
